Liberal Democrats

Darlington election results were skewed by the failure of the Liberal Democrats to field candidates for their electorate.
This resulted in the Liberal vote through out the town other than their target seats which had candidates being up for grabs and subsequently taken mostly by Labour.
Ironically, the Liberal Democrats were able to hold their own seats.
So another four years of Labour purgatory, something else to thank the LDs for!

An excellent Conservative manifesto circulating the town! The Labour group don't seem to have an answer for it, have they given up any campaign that they might have had? But the electorate may need a reminder to vote Conservative, close to the election day.

Alternative voting has caused considerable disarray not only with the public but with the politicians who govern us.
Can you imagine the effects of AV should it ever be put in place.
If there was an example needed not to support this ill conceived option then we already have it.

Why on earth would anybody want to see another Labour cabinet member in Darlington if they get beaten, or a Lib/Dem come to think of it.

The Lib/Dems have proved themselves inept and Labour have proved themselves incompetent, why then would Political want an all party Cabinet, it makes no sense unless of course political is looking to emulate the Government with a coalition.

Imitation they say is the highest form of flattery, they are of course wrong, imitation tends to caricature rather than flatter, a word of caution political, the present incumbents emulated there Government that is why Darlington is debt to the tune of 105million pounds.

If I was a cynical man, it would already seem as though this is exactly what is happening, just look at where the Lib/Dems aren't standing candidates in these local elections. Not every candidate has the luxury of standing where a hat stand with a blue rosette would win, it betrays those working hard to regain and win new seats, it betrays the people of Darlington who need a strong and robust leadership.

A coalition should be a last resort not a first priority.

IT,S A POINT OF VIEW

The Labour pledges to the people of Darlington must be a joke. Open, fair and accountable seems to be new words in the Labour council dictionary. Have they forgotten about the mysterious disappearance of the Pedestrian Heart documents and the rest of the known financial disasters of the past few years? A review of the senior council officers pay and councillor allowances could mean reasons to award further increases aswell as, but unlikely, reductions. Notably missing is the inclusion of an all party Cabinet to ensure fair town management for the residents and not just for the whims and fancies of the Labour Cabinet members.

I was given a copy of the latest Labour News.
On the front page it appears to claim credit for the Labour Party bringing Hitachi to the North East.
Nothing could be further from the truth, firstly when it comes to contract negotiations of such magnitude do Labour really believe the Coalition Government Ministers would be taking notice of representatives of a party thrown out of office for bringing this nation to its knees.
Secondly a whole host of professional highly qualified private and civil service engineers of all disciplines were in place to support the Coalition tender requirements and analysis and progress the bids.
Finally it was the intervention of David Cameron , William Hague and Philip Hammond who concluded the deal.Conservative councillors were able to meet with all three to ensure the Ministers were fully aware of the need and benefits of bring Hitachi to South Durham.
The Labour party's bells and whistles were at time a distraction with little real effect

What fantastic news about the Hitachi IEP programme and the support from the Conservatives, not withstanding the Local tories lobbying of Ministers.

What a pity that the Labour rag Northern Echo will spin as a victory for labour MPs.

Seriously how could someone who doesn't know his Bi-Modes from his Duel Voltage possibly have held any sway in getting this project this far.

I have to say I also do not recall the Labour cling-ons shouting when Lord Adonis did NOT sign the contract with agility just before the Election one prospective MP and one MP kept very quiet at that point didn't they.

Well done to Local Tories for the persistence and showing the way for the future of Darlington, bringing back manufacturing.

We have had the overspends on Pedestrian Heart, the ETC, the £57k loss on the Granite sets and now we have a projected loss of £0.5m for legal fees on the Plastic Bridge at Central Park. What happened to the so called robust measures that were put in place and boasted to PWC that would prevent such financial disasters happening again? It's absolutely clear that the council hierarchy have no idea of how to manage the financial affairs of the town. Yet they are still employed by us on obscenely high salaries and gold plated pensions. How much longer do the residents of Darlington have to put up with such incompetence in the town hall? It's time that we had a clear out from the top downwards and then perhaps we could maintain a few more essential front line services instead of cutting them.

I congratulate Cllr Charles Johnson in his exposure of the Labour Councils spin on the Governments grant reductions.
Their publicity seemed wrong from the start when they selected the Civic Theatre and the Arts centre as iconic examples of their dilemma bequeathed by their failed government.
If you analyse the councils Medium Term savings you dont need a qualification in accountancy to reach the same conclusion as Councillor Johnson.
There is no front loading , all the major reductions after the May election but this will be a half million overspent Houghton Bridge too far

The latest Northern Echo campaign re the Hitachi bid to manufacture the necessary high speed trains seems to have completely lost all political balance and a sense of reality.
Should I be surprised ? of course not . The newspaper has by virtue of its style and content already declared its allegiance to the socialist cause.
In respect of the bells and whistles surrounding Labour individuals jumping on the High speed train or is it a bandwagon one has to ask what comes first seeking political kudos or a real sense of supporting the North East.
The media publicity suggests the former and not the latter.
Perhaps they should leave the real lobbying to those working in the background directly with the Minister to try and steer a favourable outcome for South Durham.
After all why would Government want to listen to representatives of a party which brought this country to its knees
